June 14, 2024I bought a pair of these at REI, and I was very surprised that they fit, and that they looked as good as they did. I have tried baggies many times over the last 20 years, and never liked the fit. I felt like they were only made for the very athletic, straight, non curvy women. I am SO happy with the new(er) cut of them! This is my first time trying the "barely" style, every other pair I had tried were the 5" inseam, and those always either rode up in the crotch, had so much extra fabric that they looked ridiculous, or were way too tight in the thigh. I have never considered myself to be a larger or really curvy girl, but the older baggies certainly made me feel like that. Anyway, I am LOVING these now, and looking forward to purchasing a second pair. I only wish the solid bright salamander green was made in the 2.5" inseam. Also, Patagonia, the bright colors with contrasting stitching/inside band/ drawstring etc are my absolute favorites- nothing says summer, to me, like bright fun. Oh, and I purchased these in a medium. My hips are 38", waist is 28" and according to the size chart that SHOULD be a small. I had tried a small on in store and I could get them on, but they pulled way too tight across the hip and thigh and were not at all comfortable. The mediums offer enough room for movement without looking like I am wearing a diaper ;)
darn near perfect

November 18, 2024CONTEXT: I am a dude that has bought multiple of these as both a Pro and Normal person. More dude like people should wear these, just go one size up from your men's baggies size!
These are nearly perfect. They do the function and aesthetic really well, cause boy howdy can I skate, surf, hike, and teach in these with no problems.
Couple reasons they aren't perfect-
The cut can be all over the place; sometimes it has a micro inseam of an inch and/or the leg hole to butt cut will slim out for no good reason.
The other thing is the textile being used. I would love to see this silhouette be done in the 80's/90's baggies textile of a cotton poly blend or in the rip stop blend on the home waters shorts.
the zippered pocket is a nice touch.
Love these!!

December 27, 2024I wear these shorts all the time and highly recommend them. They are my go-to for backpacking and hiking because they are great for layering over, comfortable, durable, and dry quickly. I often wear them for swimming and typically don’t chaff afterwards.
For climbing I recommend the 5" over the 2. 5". The fabric over the crotch can move around and fold sometimes, leading to some unintentional flashing on the wall.
The fit can run a bit small. I normally am a medium or large and tend to stick to a large with these. I often wear men and women's clothes but do recommend the women's if you have female like hips/pelvis, the men's don't provide the same stretch. Men's do have bigger pockets.
Not for thick thighs

June 24, 2024I bought these over a year ago and have probably worn them 4X. I am lower bottom heavy with big behind and thicker thighs. I went by the size chart so I bought size L. The waist was a bit loose but the draw string helped keep it in place. These look great on me as long as I'm standing still. As soon as I start walking, they automatically rise between my thighs. With the bunch between my legs, makes it not flattering and quite uncomfortable. I then recently started wearing tights underneath to try to prevent the rise but it seemed to not do the trick. I wanted to love these shorts but I guess it will go to the donation pile. I bought the Barely Baggies™ Shorts - 2½" because I'm 5 ft with short legs.
